GREAT DAY

Larry and I visited Aztec ruins this morning early. Found a couple antique collectible stores and took in the local Safeway. Awesome National Monument with restored kiva . I found a cast iron toy stage coach with 6 horses for Larry's collection at a good price. We have reservations in Moab for tomorrow and Wednesday. Will take an early driving tour of Arches National Park. We found out the problem with the car air conditioning but won't be anywhere long enough to get it fixed til we get home. Good to hear you're all where you intended to be today. The adventure continues tomorrow.

Home in Princeton! Not too hot.

Arrived in Sacramento!!

Well, Bea and I made it to Sacramento without incident. Not very hot here. Bill and Lynn were both at the airport to meet us and we went out to Brookfield's for dinner. Bea and Lynn are getting organized for what they need to do tomorrow so they can be ready to head to the Mendocino coast for a reunion of Lynn's family.

We had such a marvelous time with all of you lovely ladies and we are looking forward to seeing you all next summer at Irish Beach.

Last night out!

Manuel and I are at the Orange Grove RV Park in Bakersfield. We like this park for the oranges we can pick from the windows of the RV in the winter. Right now the oranges look like limes and it is very hot here....not much wind though which is common in December and January. Manuel had to hook up and it is so hot he has decided not to use the workout room. I think we underestimated the heat and the effects on a body. He is trying to cool off! On to Princeton tomorrow and back to reality, work, and unpacking. Hopefully off to Bucks Lake cabin this weekend and cooler weather. It would have been nice to go on with the Shelllnuts for more sightseeing and education but that will be for another time. It sounds like they are going to see some great stuff.
I will try to empty out some of the food we packed tonight and just have the frozen pizzas in the freezer and lots and lots of veggies! Hope all are home in good health and with happy memories.

SATURDAY NIGHT

It's way too quiet by ourselves. We miss all the adventures we enjoyed this week. Larry has been showing me the ghost towns he and Manuel went to. I have been sharing pictures. The sky was a beautiful pink tonight. Tomorrow we head to Bloomfield. May stay a couple days so we can explore the Indian ruins at Aztec. Hope all are ready for the next life experience and Manuel is beating the machines in Laughlin.

WOW!!!

The heavens dumped everything available on us in Holbrook. The RV shook, leaked, rattled, and rolled. Water was flowing everywhere, lightning, wind, huge drops of rain, windows open had rain everywhere. Luckily I didn't put my bear out to try him out!! It is absolutely gorgeous now, sun, breaze, smells of cooking, and few clouds. What a difference.
Been thinking of everyone.

MB and Manuel going home

MB and Manuel are settled in Holbrook for the evening. We were going to go on a walking tour but it is a driving tour instead and we are tired. Sky looks ominous and Park is relatively empty but huge and nicely done. Wishing I was with the "girls" still and enjoying the museum but it is nice also to be heading home, being the homebody I am. What a wonderful week I have had and am already looking forward to the next one. THANK YOU everyone.
(The library is already sending impatient notices to me asking for responses) Ugh!

One gone today, MB departs for home.

On vacation

Two of our number had rough sleeping, but we gamely headed out for Taos on a lovely morning. Beautiful mountainous country and a few not very prosperous little settlements on the 1 hr trip. Parked on the picturesque square (tree donated by Mabel Dodge?) and hit the shops. Ran into one couple who shared the lost sunglasses story with us at Red River…recognized us even though we all wore different hats. Lunch at Alley Cantina, one of the oldest buildings in Taos. The wall by the funky bathroom is nearly 400 years old. Good food…my fish tacos were excellent. Bev and Barb bought matching Taos sandals,, Mary Beth purchased jewelry for Louise’s birthday, Peggy bought earrings for herself, Deborah is waiting to find a pot at the pueblo, and I found a smashing hat I didn’t need (but bought anyway).

Turned our great parking spot over to some other grateful shopper and drove to one of the most photographed churches in America, St Francis de Asis. It is about 300 years old and still serves 3,000 parishioners in three Sunday services. Every June one member of each family donates a day toward re stuccoing…. they bring the dirt from a special place in the mountains, mix it with straw. Amazingly uniform color and texture, with the straw providing an interesting texture. The man in the little gift shop has been a part of the congregation all of his life; he was born in the gift shop building and the old adobe falling into disrepair next door (because no one redoes it any more) belonged to his grandfather.

On to Kit Carson’s home; Carson is one of the most famous people associated with Taos. He lived here with his third wife and their six children for many years, though he was off doing frontiersman stuff most of that time. We watched an interesting History Channel video about Carson in which his great grandson portrayed him (thought they had done well in finding someone with a physical resemblance). Carson had many careers ...trapper, hunter, scout. As the brochure put it, “…modern biographers…have portrayed him as a complex man…who participated in almost all of the major historical events of America’s westward expansion that came to be known as Manifest Destiny.” Manuel and Larry were watching the video as we came in.

Stopped at two thrift store on the way back. Too tired to stay in town for dinner so we headed back to RR. Invested a significant amount of time sorting through online reviews of the few dinner places in RR. TMI! Finally decided to walk to Texas Red Steakhouse (despite some negative reviews) and had a wonderful dinner. There was a 45-minute wait, but we were allowed to sit upstairs in a comfy lounge with our margaritas where, now revived, we quickly decided on our plan for the rest of the week. It was pouring rain as we left, but the hostess with the charming Georgian accent made two runs to World Mark with us on her way home.

To bed early with a plan for substantial breakfast and trip to Taos Pueblo and Millicent Rogers Museum and early dinner in Taos.

with all the leftovers. Downpour last night while at Texas Reds for dinner. Nice hostess drove us back to our rooms as we had walked up the 3 blocks to eat.

Day 1---shopping!

Bea, Bev, Deborah and I arrived in RR last night about 9 pm after a very leisurely drive from Albuquerque. A few stops in Taos along the way to see the Massas and the Shellnuts, get some groceries and have a little nosh at the Taos Inn.

Peggy and Mary Beth arrived Monday morning in time for breakfast of healthy cereal, berries, yogurt, and cottage cheese. Giftys were exchanged including wonderful magenta hats from P&MB! After visiting around the breakfast table we finally got out the door to explore and stimulate the local shops. We wore our new magenta hats and created quite a stir when 6 of us would walk in to a store! One person wanted to take our picture and posted it to her Facebook.

Grandma's Girls II...2011

Two years later and we are heading for Red River, not far from Taos. Emails have been flying back and forth. Peggy and Mary Beth are on their way in RVs with Larry and Manuel. The latter will park in Taos and have their own great adventure. On Sunday, Bev, Barb, Deborah and I fly to Albuquerque from Indiana, California, Washington and Texas where we will rent the group SUV and travel to Bev's time-share in Red River.

The weather will be warm (80's) with T-Storms possible every day. As Peggy said, pack for every eventuality but snow. I guess that means an umbrella, changes of clothing if we get wet...I wonder if my Costa Rica poncho needs another good time?

I have been working like crazy to get all my volunteer work under control before I leave...agendas and reports for meetings I will miss, dividing up $500 of fair trade coffee, chocolate, olive oil orders for the monthly church marketplace August 14 (because of the weather and church office closed for vacation it has to come to my house tomorrow, otherwise I would pass it off to someone else), getting Facebook page underway for the group of IWP mentors I will support in the coming year. Lynn will be here for another week so he can close the house and do final yard work. That's a relief.

Once I leave I can let it all go...the yard, the to-do lists, the frustrating news reports out of Washington (media cleansing ahead) and enjoy my sisters and cousins...touring, talking, cooking, eating, staying away from fake policemen. Then on to CA for Lynn's family reunion in the Mendocino Mts with grandson Kepler, time with beloved Illig aunties, Lynn's sister, niece and brother in law.

Now off to my pre-vacation pedicure!
